Italian Civil Wedding Ceremonies

Ceremonies with civil validity may be celebrated at the Town Hall or a historical building owned by the Municipality. The municipality of Ponzano di Fermo holds civil weddings in a picturesque room under the town castle. The Castle was built in the fifteenth century and underneath it, in a vaulted room, the mayor or its deputy celebrates the civil ceremony at a leisurely pace. After the ceremony you’ll have all the time for photographs.

The villa is only a few minutes drive away, however we can also suggest other important locations depending on your preferences.

Documents requied for British nationals

You’ll need to get a certificate of no impediment (CNI) from the authorities in the UK to prove you’re allowed to marry.

You can normally get a CNI by giving a notice of marriage at your local register office or registrar in the UK

A CNI issued in England, Wales or Northern Ireland is valid for 6 months. A CNI issued in Scotland is valid for 3 months.

They’ll post your notice, and as long as nobody has registered an objection after a specified number of days (normally 15 or 21), they’ll issue your CNI.

Getting a statutory declaration

While you’re waiting for your CNI, you and your partner will need to make a statutory declaration before a solictor or public notary. The Italian authorities will need this in addition to your CNI. There’s a standard template in English and Italian that you can download from the UK Gov. website.

Legalisation and translation

You’ll need to get your statutory declaration and CNI legalised (certified as genuine) by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO).

In Italy

You’ll also need to get your CNI translated and sworn before the Italian courts or an Italian Justice of the Peace.

Italian Religious Wedding Ceremonies

A ‘Matrimonio Concordatario’ is a Roman Catholic wedding legally binding and recognised by the Italian authorities, because it contains a civil element within the service, therefore it will not be necessary to perform a separate civil ceremony. The ceremony will be performed in the local Roman Catholic Church, but first you will have to contact your local parish priest in the UK to help you prepare the necessary documents (in addition to the above mentioned Nulla Osta).

Ponzano di Fermo boasts a perfect location for a religious Roman Catholic wedding, in the splendid San Marco’s church which dates from the twelfth century. It’s a lovely, simple yet majestic church set amongst olives, on top of a hill just outside the village, it could not be more suggestive.
